A Playhouse for Charity: Arched Ceiling for American Airlines Center

Recently we were approached to donate a groin vault ceiling for a playhouse that would be raffled off for charity.The charity was for Dallas Casa; to aid abused & neglected children (www.DallasCasa.org). Our project was one of a kind. We were delegated the task to replicate the roof & ceiling of the American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Mavericks & Dallas Stars.

I immediately thought, "How can anyone pass up this exciting opportunity?" So we jumped right on in and started construction. The tricky part to this project was designing the groin vault roof and interior groin vault ceiling because we had to literally create two groin vaults that would sit on top of one another. The reason we built the ceiling and roof this way was to insure we could add adequate support for the roof. After we were all finished, the builder along with Sign Grafx finished out the playhouse beautifully. The American Airlines Center playhouse is one of a kind and will make any child feel as if he was sitting court side at a Mavericks game.

Lately, I have being receiving a dramatic increase in phone calls with customers having a need to add a little something to there home. The something they are usually referring to is for an architectural detail that will help there homes stand out from the competition. Often it is a simple dome in the entry way or master bath, a cove ceiling in a traditional pop up ceiling, a groin vault in a hallway or some simple archways to break up a room. This morning when I popped out of bed, I decided to venture over to a local jobsite to check up on some arches we delivered the day before. As I arrived with my coffee in hand, I was instantly greeted by the framer with a big smile on his face. At first I thought he was eye balling my coffee and I started to think that he thought my coffee was for him. So like any sales professional would do, I immediately offered it to him. He couldn't see my hands but my fingers were crossed and I was giving a quick shout out to God praying that he would not take my caffeine rush away. Well, He chuckled and said, "oh no! I am fine, I just need to add one more arch!" Well, with a sigh of relief I was able to keep my coffee and make an additional sale.
As we walked onto the jobsite, I quickly began to notice all 84 arches were now installed. "Wow!" I said, "How long did it take you to install all of these arches?" Well he replied, "About 4 hours! We would have finished earlier but the Meals on Wheels van pulled up and we couldn't resist taking a break!"
As I hopped in my truck to head on into work, I managed to snap some photos of the Groin Vaults, Barrel vaults and Archways he installed. See photos Below

Sunbelt Builders Show 2009- Building Booth #601

A short recap of the 2009 Sunbelt Builder Show! Booth 601 had great success in showing off many different products and services to new and existing customers. Wesley Scott (Archking57) with Archways and Ceilings was pleased to share information on their Groin Vaults, Dome Ceilings, Cove Ceilings, Barrel Vaults and Archways. Premrock Drywall Services had fun educating attendee's of the Sunbelt show on American Clay! Not only did they provide demonstrations, but Jim White was there to show samples of American Clay, Venetian plaster, Level 5 Slick Wall and much more. Chris Ludwig with BMC West showcased an afforadable arched doorway with moulding. Chris spent most of his time meeting with customers talking about doors, trim, columns, windows, stair parts, and plywood. Denise Phelps with Flooring Services was also in attendance this year! Building a Barrel Vault with an Igloo

Most of you are probably already confused by the title of this blog. "A barrel vault with an igloo??? What in the world is that??" Well the best way to describe this architectural gem is to compare it to a home of an Eskimo. Yep… I said an Eskimo home. See the picture to the left, the opening of the Eskimo’s home barrels into another curve, so we call this an igloo. Don’t confuse this with a groin vault. A groin vault’s definition is two intersecting barrel vaults that pass through one another at the same height. An igloo is formed by two barrels intersecting at two different heights.

Now with the igloo definition out of the way, let’s get to my story. I received an email from a builder this afternoon who was ecstatic about the igloo he had is framer install using www.archwaysandceilings.com . He was happy to see such a tricky ceiling completed in a quick timely manner, and not to mention with a real affordable cost. Everything was precut and shipped to the jobsite ready to install in less than 5 days.

Errrrrrr……….REWIND….

The builder gave us strict instructions that he would like the barrel to match the radius of the door he had ordered, and that he would like it to intersect it with archways on either side. Besides getting the measurements for us, that was all he needed to tell us. We then manufactured the product, supplied a 2D Cad illustrating the layout of the arched pieces and shipped it. Builder received the product and “BAM” ceiling was done! It is nice to say that we have another satisfied customer

How to build a Radius Ceiling- in this case an Oval Ceiling

Installing a radius tray ceiling or what I like to simply call an Oval Ceiling is a piece of cake. The hardest part about building this type of ceiling is figuring how big you want it to be. Yep it is that easy! First you want to frame a box in your ceiling. In order for your ceiling to be an Oval, the box has to be a rectangle. Why? if your box is a square then it would be a circle, but you guys already know that! :) So once you have finished framing your box, measure inside to inside the lenght and width. Once you have these key measurements, give Archways and Ceilings a call to place your order. You will notice that Radius Tray Ceilings are not on the website, but that means nothing. Many products we sell are not on the website, so if you ever have a curved ceiling or archway and you don't see it on our site, then call us. Because if it is curved I am almost 100% positive we can build it for you! Ok...ok... Let's get back on track. Once you have placed your order with Archways and Ceilings we will ship you your order to the jobsite so it will be there first thing in the morning waiting to be installed. Now for the easy part. From time to time we often get questions if a certain ceiling treatment or archway will look good in a specific location. The questions often consist of: How would this look? Can we do something out of the ordinary? How do I prep for the Archways and Ceilings product?...and so on! These questions is why I love my job! This is what we are good at! We are great at helping clients add value to their homes with easy and affordable ceiling treatments and archways from start to finish. Let me give you a classic example of what happend to me a little over a month ago. A Fort Worth, Texas builder was wanting to add a little flare to the Master Suite. He provided us with the plan and instructed us that he wanted something that was different from the normal pop-up ceiling and that would "WOW" his potential homebuyers. So with this in mind, we used a four pronged approach to ensure he was a 100% satisfied.

1st - I listened! From here I worked with our in-house designer that took his vision and created a 3D CAD that gave him a visual representation of his vision. Once he was able to see his vision, he was amazed at the result and advised us to move forward with production. He was also surprised at how affordable it was.

2nd - We instructed him how to prepare for the product. We gave him framing guidelines for each ceiling and archway treatment so that when the product arrived it was "install ready".

3rd - When he received the product, each ceiling treatment had its own detailed instructions. Depending on the design, the instructions came with a step by step instruction sheet and/or a 2D Cad to illustrate layout. We also gave him a toll free phone number that he could call for techincal support 877-303-ACME(2263). However, our instructions were so clear and easy to install the only phone call we got from him was "WOW" that was easy.

4th - We gave him advice, insight, and insider tips on how to finish out his Archways and Ceiling designs to get the maximum "WOW" value.

Building an Archway, building a Barrel Vault, building a Groin Vault is just another day at Archways and Ceilings Made Easy!

Building archways, barrel vaults, and groin vaults are Archwaysandceilings.com 's specialty (click here to see website). Today, as I was out for a drive, I decided to stop by and check in on some framed houses to perhaps strir up some business. As I arrived at my first stop I quickly recognized that this builder was a customer of ours. There was arches everywhere! I stopped in just as they were installing some arches that they recieved the day before. They quickly figured out who I was and were instantly eager to pose for some pictures. Let see how easy it was for them to install some archways, a small barrel vault and 3 groin vaults:

In this first picture, I saw a gentleman install this small elliptical barrel in an entry way in less than 5 minutes. It was amazing!

In these next few pictures I captured the framer installing the first strut in a groin vault!
He simply shot 2 nails in the top and 2 more in each of the sides. Then he was off to his next strut!

Here is an example of 2 different groin vaults the framer installed earlier that day. I found one of these Groin Vaults in the Master Bath and the other in a Vestibule of the Master Bedroom.

The installation time for each groin was roughly 30 minutes for each! Not bad!!

The last picture I was able to take was one of a Half-Circle arch or also known as an "Half-Round." I only took one photo of the Half-Circle arch because there was at least 20 to 25 of these types of arches installed at the jobsite. The framer mentioned that these babies were the easiest to install. He estimated that for all 20 arches or so , took him about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to install. Not counting his breaks he chuckled!

How To Frame an Archway - Framing an interior Archway

Simply measure the depth and width of your opening.

Once your order has been placed, you will notice that your order will arrive promptly. If your arch has a depth greater then a 2x6 simply finish the pre split cuts provided. This will allow you to attach the arch to the front and back of your opening. If your arch is smaller than a 2x6 then you can skip this step.

If you have choosen an adjustable arch then you will need to trim the arch to meet your exact measurements. If it is a fitted arch you may skip this step. An adjustable arch is good when you are not quite sure of your rough opening measurements.

Simply trim the excess arch with your saw. Now you will be ready to install.

Here is the fun part, simply nail your arch into place.

All done! Now wasn't that easy!

Extreme Makeover Home Edition - Augustin Family

In December of 2008 Archways and Ceilings Made Easy had the wonderful opportunity of participating in the Extreme Makeover Home Edition show filmed out in Keller, TX. Steve Wall of Wall Homes was the builder picked to build this huge house in 106 hours for a family in need of a little help. The Augustin family was chosen to have there house knocked down and rebuilt because they were a family in need of such a miracle. Having experienced a premature baby and a house hold over run by flood waters it was time for a little good luck to come there way. The family has also been strong advocates for the March of Dimes (An organization that helps fight for the survival of premature babies) and Habitat for Humanity.

Archways and Ceilings was able to pitch in and help build this beautiful home by donating the interior and exterior archways. Wall Homes asked for ACME's participation because they needed a quality product that could help decrease there construction times. When Wall homes gave the word to install the Archways, Archways and Ceilings was able to install more then a dozen arches in a half hour with the use of only one framer.

Before you install an arch, You have to pick what style of arch best suits your needs. Archways and Ceilings offers 3 types of archways; Soft arches, Half-circle arches, and Elliptical arches.

Three questions to ask when picking your arch style:

1. What arch style suits me best? If you want consistency, then take a look at your arch-top windows. Are they soft, half-circle or elliptical?

2. Can I have several different styles of arches in my home? Yes! The most common scenario for having different arch styles in one home is having half-circle and elliptical arches together. These arches blend well, and allow you to span greater opening widths without encroaching too far down the stud.

3. What is the header height of the opening you are looking to arch? A rule of thumb is that the lowest point an arch should contact the stud should be no lower that 6'-8". Soft arches drop the least followed by elliptical and lastly by half-circles.

Now that you have an idea of what styles Archways and Ceilings offers, along with how to pick a style that best fits your needs, let get to installing. How to Frame a Groin Vault?

When I picture the look on a contractors face when he/she hears that they have to frame a groin vault, I smile to myself. The look of frustration and confusion is written all over there faces. Not to mention, they hear dollar signs! Well, if you can kick your old school ways of thinking and try something new, I will erase those frowns and turn them upside down.
So to answer the infamous question on how to frame a Groin Vault, it actually is quite simple. Simply measure the perimeter of your room. If it is a rectangle, measure the long side and the short side. If it is a square the measurements should be the same. Note that I said should be. :) Once you have measured your sides you now have to figure your rise. The rise is often controlled by your ceiling height. For example, if you have a 12’ high ceiling and 8’ doorways then you want to pick a rise that keeps you high enough off the doorways but still curved enough to give you a strong groin vault. Recently due to the competitive market, our Customers have been pushing for some challenging designs to set there homes apart from there competition. A Groin Vault often known as a Cross Vault, is two barrel ceilings intersecting. This is a simple task for Archways and Ceilings, but our customer wanted to step it up a notch. He asked if we can create an Octagonal Groin Vault which would be four barrel ceilings intersecting, in which, I quickly replied, "Of course!" Being in sales I could not let the opportunity pass to achieve such a task. Well after thinking out how to construct a feature, we quickly began manufacturing. Four days later I met my builder at the job site and watched the Octagonal Groin vault go up in 30 minutes. The builder was both happy and amazed that such a complicated ceiling treatment could go up so quickly.
